On February 28, 1928, through his experiments on the scattering of light, Dr. C.V. Raman discovered the Raman effect which shows that when light traverses a transparent material, some of the light that is deflected changes in wavelength. He was awarded the Nobel prize in Physics later in 1930.

The experiment had further established the quantum nature of light.

Dr. C. V. Raman was very confident about his research and was sure to win the Nobel prize.But he was disappointed when it wen to Richardson in 1928 and to DeBroglie in 1929. His efforts were duly noticed and credited in 1930 though and he was awarded the Nobel prize in Physics in the year 1930.
