3 March

3 March 78 AD marks the beginning of Saka era (शक). The Satavahana king Shalivahana (Gautamiputra Satkarni) is credited with the initiation of the era also know as Shalivahana Saka era. It marked the victory of Shalivahana over the Sakas of west.
After independence, Indian government adopted the Saka calender in 1956.
Note: 3 March 78 is the date according to Gregorian Calender. That means Gudhi Padwa (चैत्र शुक्ल प्रतिपदा) fell on 3 March 78. I used this for cross-referencing. http://www.cc.kyoto-su.ac.jp/~yanom/pancanga/index.html
